In September 2017 my beautiful son Benjamin Shaw died as a result of a tragic weightlifting accident in a northern Brisbane gym. Being Ben’s Dad was the absolute highlight of my life, and losing him broke my heart and changed my life forever. In the immediate aftermath, my solace was cycling which got me through some pretty dark times.
Ben's organs saved the lives of 6 people, with one of them being Harper, a beautiful little 2 year old who had spent her entire life in hospital until she received part of Ben's liver. During a rough time post-transplant, Harper continued to demonstrate her fighting spirit and tenacity, and now I am beyond proud to say that Harper is thriving and is now living the life she should have always had. Watching Harper’s progress has given me a measure of comfort during this time.
In 2018 I rode 60km on Ben’s bike in his honour with his favourite childhood toy Ella in the Cycle of Giving charity bike in Brisbane for the first time. With the help of some generous donors I was able to raise over $3000. In 2019 I ask you again to consider donating, and even if you have the energy, to join our team Forever Ben Shaw. And if you cannot donate or ride, then that’s OK, just please consider registering your name as an organ donor with the Organ & Tissue Authority. At any one time there can be 1500 people on the waiting list in Australia, and that on average people on the transplant list can have to wait between six months and four years. In that time many poor people’s time runs out and they pass away before they get their chance.
